Meet the Trophies

The Australian Open women's singles trophy is named the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. Daphne Akhurst won five Australian singles titles and nine Australian doubles titles between 1924 and 1931. She ranks third on the Australian all-time singles champion list behind Margaret Court and Nancye Wynne Bolton. Daphne tragically died from an ectopic pregnancy at the age of 29.

The Australian Open men's singles trophy is named the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. Sir Norman Brookes, or 'The Wizard' as he was known, was the first man not representing Britain, and first left-hander, to win Wimbledon, a feat he accomplished in 1907. Brookes won his home major in 1911 and three years later captured the singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon. In 1926 he became the president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, a position he held until 1955.
