Many of you may know Mrs Nan Sandford, who has been a Member for over six decades. Having relocated to Australia two and a half years ago, she and her family were delighted to be back in Singapore recently for vacation.

Mrs Sanford was notably the first lady elected onto the Club’s General Committee in 2001, and since then, had served on the Committee and Sub-Committees of Children’s Activities, Club Relations, Entertainment, Food & Beverage, Library, Magazine, Tennis, Bridge, and Staff, for over a decade.

She had been involved in Club activities ever since her late husband joined the Club in 1953, teaching swimming and tennis lessons for children of Members free-of-charge. In 1969, then-President Mr Joe Elias suggested that she manage all children’s and sports activities, which she gladly took on.

Her proudest moment was in February 1996, when she and other ladies became full Members of their own right, which was quite an accomplishment. Mrs Sandford continued offering lessons at no charge, which extended to bridge sessions and tennis classes for staff on their lunch breaks. Many staff fondly remember her for being a champion for staff and truly adore her.

Although she decided not to contest for a seat on the General Committee in the 2013 Annual General Meeting, she continued serving the Club as Club Relations Adviser, a liaison to new Members, Absent Members returning from abroad, and visitors to the Club.

The Club was a huge part of her family’s and her lives, especially since their home at that time was just a short walk away. Her children, Simon and Deborah, recounted that their mother refused to move away, even though their father was offered several times to move to another house after his promotion, as she wanted to remain in close proximity of the Club.

During her younger days, Mrs Sandford thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous fancy dress parties, especially those held on New Year’s Eve, and always looked forward to them. Besides these Club events, she loved the annual Staff Party. Needless to say, she made many dear friends at the Club and befriended staff as well.

Although she no longer resides in Singapore, she remains very proud of the Club and would like to thank all Members and staff for their constant support of the Club.
